November, 2006

I think everyone loves to watch the motion of trees as they sway in the breeze. The roots are firmly established in the earth, yet the branches stir with the slightest murmur of the wind. It beautifully symbolizes living in harmony with nature: to be established in the invincibility of the Transcendent, while flowing in harmony with the most subtle of whispers. What Does Support of Nature Look Like?

Once upon a time, some spiritual seekers took a long pilgrimage to visit a great enlightened Master in Tibet. They traveled by boat, donkey, and on foot. They weathered severe terrain, cold, and storms. After several months, they finally found the Master's ashram. When they were escorted in to see him, the Master acted very strangely. Normally a quiet, compassionate, and gentle man, he was wild and aggressive. He scolded and mocked the weary travelers. They became very upset. Then he sent them to their rooms for the night.

The Master's closest disciple, dumbfounded, asked, "Master, I have never seen you behave that way before. These people traveled so far to see you. Why did you treat them like that?"

An Excerpt from The Golden Frog by Michael Mamas

In this excerpt, Bruce and Nathaniel are having lunch after not seeing each other for several years.

From Chapter 19 - What Matters?

Partway through dessert, Nathaniel reached into the pocket of his sports jacket, pulled out a thick envelope, and set it on the table in front of me. "Bruce, I'm sorry it took me so long to get this back to you."

I lifted the envelope and looked inside to find a stack of one hundred dollar bills.

"This is to pay back, with interest, the loan you gave me so I could go to India. I'll never be able to thank you enough."

I looked up from the money and into Nathaniel's eyes. It was then I knew for sure that my old friend, Nathaniel, was still there inside that busy businessman body with all the same depth, love, and wisdom. I understood in that moment that for Nathaniel, our friendship transcended time. It didn't matter to him at all that we had spoken quite infrequently over the past several years. The look in his eyes told me I was still his confidant, still as dear to him as I ever was. Feeling into the timelessness of our friendship was for me an unusual sensation. We picked up exactly where we left off. That timeless feeling reassured me Nathaniel would always be my friend and I would always be his confidant.

"Nathaniel," I said, "you've already paid me back many times over. I can't possibly accept this money." I smiled and pushed the envelope back towards him.

The love in Nathaniel's eyes overwhelmed me. In that moment, I learned that true spirituality has little to do with a mellow or peaceful demeanor. It has everything to do with what dwells within a person's heart and soul. Every time I was around Nathaniel, I learned one more spiritual lesson.

After we finished our dessert, Nathaniel hurried back to work and I rushed off to the airport to catch my flight.

During the flight home, I reflected on my visit with Nathaniel. On the surface, his life was intense and chaotic. But when I looked into his eyes, I sensed what resided deep within him. In that moment, I more fully understood that looking at the surface of a person's life means little. The depth is what really matters.

The exquisite nature of life is ungraspable, unknowable. Yet, through our striving to grasp it, we come to know it more and more fully. The ways of the world are indeed mysterious.
