I was recently awarded the title of Adhyatm Vidhya Visharad (Spiritual Master) from Bhagavan Yagnyavalkya Ved Tatavagyan Yogashram, the Sanskrit College at the University of Gujarat. Going to the ashram to receive this award was an incredibly moving experience for me. It was a great honor to be in the presence of so many noted scholars of Vedic wisdom. Yet, it was not just their knowledge and incredible dignity that humbled me, but the openness of their hearts.

Before the award ceremony, the scholars and I visited with Shastriji, the head of the ashram presenting the award. He is a saintly gentleman of ninety-three years, who was dressed in traditional attire and garlanded with strands of beads.

The ceremony was simple, yet quite meaningful. There were about 400 people in attendance to witness the presentation of several awards given that day. Being the guest of honor, I spoke about how the knowledge stays alive only through those who truly embody the knowledge.

After the award presentation, our visit continued with a luncheon. Then, Shastriji insisted we all return to his home to sit together. He asked me to sit with him on his couch as he read his newspaper. He simply wanted to share his afternoon with us. It was a charming, heartfelt afternoon.

I was particularly moved by the family feeling that permeated the ashram. Everyone, including the very old and very young have an important role in the community. This is what the family of humanity is meant to be.

Upon leaving, the pundit boys crowded around me, all wanting to touch me. Through the window of the car as we drove away, we were still exchanging high-fives. I am happy to say our family has extended to the other side of the globe.

Why an Enlightened Community? - A New Article by Michael

Sometime when people are talking, pretend you don't understand the language they are speaking. See how much you can get from the tone of their voice and gestures. Observe the behavior that goes beyond their words. Just feel the energy contained within the interpersonal dynamic.

You can generalize this to large groups. Watching the energetics of a lecturer (that which exudes beyond the words) can be fascinating. Yet, watching the energetics of the audience can be even more fascinating. A group consciousness takes over. This can also be witnessed in a broad range of animal species: dogs running in a pack, newborn pups curling up together, the movement of a flock of birds, etc.

An Excerpt from Unconditioned Spirit by Michael Mamas

    From Chapter 16, I-get-it Syndrome

We live in an age where we can pick up a book of the teaching of some enlightened Master and, after an afternoon's reading, decide we get all that he is saying. This is called the I-get-it Syndrome. It keeps you stuck.

We function from our conditioning. Our life experiences condition our awareness and feelings to function a certain way. What we think is mostly a function of how we have been conditioned to think. What we feel is mostly a function of how we have been conditioned to feel. So, when you read the teachings of a great enlightened Master, you perceive onto them and say, "Oh yeah, I get that." The teachings are viewed through your conditioning.

Thereby, the Master's words are heard on a superficial level.

We decide that we understand something simply because we intellectually understand it.
In that manner, Knowledge is lost. True Knowledge is found as one awakens to one's inner essence. Knowledge does not come from out to in.
True Knowledge is attained from within and radiates out.

No society can truly become healthy through the imposition of laws. Societies become healthy only as the individuals within the society awaken to their true nature-divinity. This is a physiological process.
