An Excerpt from The Golden Frog by Michael Mamas
From Chapter 42, page 218.
"So how are you doing?" Ashley asked as we walked outside.
"I-I'm fine," I stammered. "I don't know what all happened in there." But I did know Nathaniel uncovered a very vulnerable facet of my psyche.
Ashley tried to console me. "Nathaniel can really be intense sometimes. I don't think you're expected to know all that happened."
Frustrated, I snapped back. "Well, it would be nice if I did. He was talking about what makes people tick and I'm a therapist. I'm beginning to think all of my years studying psychology were a self-indulgent, self-perpetuating, ego trip."
"How's that?" Ashley asked supportively.
"I was looking to fill myself up. It was all for my own self," I exclaimed with disdain. "Nathaniel made me realize that."
Ashley, now in psychotherapist mode, offered, "I'm surprised you're not angry with him."
"Why would I be angry?" I fired back.
"Well," Ashley calmly replied. "You get angry when someone suggests what you're doing is off."
"No I don't." I barked. "Not necessarily."
"What about your dad?" she coolly inquired.
"Who are you, asking me these questions? Nathaniel?" I yelled. "Lighten up! I just got off the hot seat!" I was out of control.
